Marian Rivera No. 1 in FHM Philippines 100 Sexiest Women?

Another controversy is about the irregularities in the FHM Philippines 100 Sexiest Women. According to the delayed “current results” of FHM Philippines’ 100 Sexiest Women in the World poll, Marian Rivera is now (allegedly) in the no. 1 position while Angel Locsin dropped to no. 4.

According to Reggee Bonoan on his “Showbiz Atbpa.” column in Balita, a number of people have seen the last update by FHM with regards to the ongoing “100 Sexiest” poll wherein the Dyesebel star has overtaken the top spot from Angel Locsin. Prior to the deadline of the poll, reports proliferated on blogs and even on primetime news last week that Angel Locsin is leading the said poll by more than 7,000 votes. Following her is previous winner Katrina Halili and in third place is Marian Rivera.

Marian Rivera (316,135 votes) was crowned on July 17, as 2008's FHM Philippines Sexiest Woman at the World Trade Center, Pasay City (against 99 contestants). She bested Diana Zubiri, Iwa Moto, Katrina Halili, Cristine Reyes, Ehra Madrigal, and former GMA-7 darling and 2005 FHM winner Angel Locsin.

Marian Rivera

Rivera left her hometown to pursue a career as a ramp and commercial model. Not long after, she landed an appearance on TV advertisements for Skin White Lotion and Sky Flakes crackers where she was seen by TAPE Inc.'s executive producer, Tony Tuviera. From then on, she starred in a series of afternoon soap operas for TAPE Inc. and GMA Network such as Kung Mamahalin Mo Lang Ako, Agawin Mo Man Ang Lahat (where she was named as the Best New Female TV Personality at the 2006 PMPC Star Awards) and Pinakamamahal along with Oyo Boy Sotto as her main leading man. GMA Network then cast her into mother roles for the afternoon Philippine-Malaysian drama Muli with Alfred Vargas and the primetime telefantasya Super Twins.

Main article: MariMar (Philippine TV series)

Rivera rose to fame when she won an audition for the title role of MariMar, the remake of the Mexican telenovela which starred Thalía. Before the auditions, Rivera knew little about the character as she was only 11 years old when the original soap opera aired on Philippine TV. Rivera then took the time out to do a research about the role over the internet. Other actresses who took part on the auditions were Nadine Samonte, Katrina Halili, Jennylyn Mercado, Karylle, Jewel Mische, and Bianca King.

MariMar premiered on August 13, 2007 with a 36.6% rating. Her participation in the show led her to becoming a household name among the Filipino audiences that some would refer to her as Marimar/Bella even when she's out of her character, and with critics from the Guillermo Mendoza Memorial Scholarship Foundation, Inc. honoring her as Phenomenal TV Star in the 38th Box-Office Entertainment Awards.

Main article: Dyesebel (TV series)

After MariMar, Rivera plays the role of Dyesebel[13] Dingdong Dantes, who was her leading man in MariMar, pairs up with Rivera as Fredo. On April 28, 2008, the pilot episode of Dyesebel got 44.9% in the ratings despite the power interruptions in Metro Manila.

Angel Locsin

One of the prettiest faces on the Philippine Television. Angel as she is popularly known has captured the heart of the audience with her powerful acting. When she reached her fourteenth birthday, her parents decided to separate and Angel went on to live with her father.

Angel Locsin was not born an actress but she climbed the ladder of success, a step at a time, pushing, persevering, and not giving up. The opportunity actually fell on Locsin’s lap when she was out shopping at SM City North EDSA with her friend after bunking classes. A talent scout noticed her and soon she was taking auditions for multiple commercials. Her first break came when GMA Networks launched her in their youth-oriented program named Click as the tomboyish Charlie a.k.a Charlotte in 1999. This was the stepping stone towards a bright future that she may not have foreseen at the age of fourteen. Her on screen charms entwined with her looks and acting made her a hot favorite amongst people of all ages. Infact FHM Philippines has consistently ranked her amongst the "100 Sexiest Women in the World" and that’s is no mean achievement from any standpoint.

The year 2003, bought despair into Locsin’s personal life as her boyfriend Miko Sotto fell from his 9 th floor Condominium. The same year, she appeared in a television show called Ang Iibigin Ay Ikaw Pa Rin Mariella and acted in the movie Mano Po Two: My Home Eliza (2004). However, she did not achieve prominence till she was cast in a lead role in the television series Mulawin in 2004. This was followed by another televisions series where Locsin starred as the superhero Darna, which is an adaptation of the famous Mars Ravelo comics. By now, Locsin was the shining star on the horizon with box office hits and joined the elitist league.

Some of her movie credits include Kuya Barbs Dumlao (2004), Singles Sam (2004), Mano Po Three: My Love Eliza (2003), Ping Lacson (2003) and Sigaw (2004). One of her major box office hits is Let The Love Begin (2005) where she teamed up with Richard Gutierrez . Angel Locsin has won three prestigious awards that goes on to show how talented she really is and that there is a dazzling future in the making.

Koda Kumi

Kumi Koda (known as "Koda" in the U.S.) – Kumi Koda’s first single TAKE BACK charted 18th in Billboard Magazine’s Hot Dance Music/Maxi-Singles chart after its US release in March 2001. Her follow-up single, TRUST YOUR LOVE charted 39th in Billboard's Hot 100 single sales chart and No.1 in Billboard's Hot Dance Music/Maxi-Singles chart.

She has collaborated with BoA on THE MEANING OF PEACE, a September 11 charity single CD produced by Tetsuya Komuro, one of Japan’s most prolific and successful producer. The release of her first album, AFFECTION was produced by Max Matsuura, and contains remixes by Hex Hector and Jonathan Peters.

With gaining popularity, Koda Kumi did a great job for Squaresoft singing the theme song (1000 no Kotoba) and opening song (real Emotion) for Final Fantasy X-2!

On September 21st, Kumi released a Best Of collection, entitled BEST ~first things~. Though the album was second to Mr. Children the first four days on the Oricon charts, it reached the top spot on the 25th. At the week's end, the album ranked #2 on the weekly charts and sold a highly impressive amount. Through the next week Kumi finally reached #1 on the weekly charts. To date, she has sold over 1.2 million copies and holds the best-selling female album of 2005, beating out many famous female artists, including Ayumi Hamasaki and BoA.

Most recently, Ku's single "you" placed #1 on the Oricon charts for it's first 3 days, keeping popular boyband TOKIO from the top position. The single's success continued throughout the week and reached #1 on the weekly charts selling over 72,000 copies, making it Kumi's first ever number one hit. "you" is the first single released by Kumi in a set of 12 singles in a 12 week period. The Following week the second single of the 12 set, "Birthday Eve", was released and grabbed the #6 position for the week (selling 44,294 copies of the limited pressing of 50,000 copies) while "you" took the 7th position. This marks the first time since Ai Otsuka's "Sakuranbo" and "Amanebo" singles in March of 2004 that a female singer has had two singles both in the top ten in the same week.

In addition to her singing career, Koda also models for Christian Dior in Japan.

Vultures circle as idol Kumi Koda licks her wounds!

If the furor over comments that J-pop superidol Kumi Koda made on the radio a few weeks ago teaches us anything, it's to "be careful what you joke about." There are two problems with using humor in public: Either the joke falls flat and nobody laughs, or the topic is beyond the pale and people are offended rather than amused.

The latter problem applies in Koda's case, but the joke was so bizarre that it deserves more scrutiny than it has received. During a conversation on Nippon Hoso's late-night talk show "All Night Nippon," Koda mentioned that her manager, a woman, recently got married. When asked when the manager planned to have a child, Koda said she hoped she would have one as soon as possible. "After a mother turns 35, her amniotic fluid becomes spoiled," the singer said between husky giggles. "True, true! It gets dirty. That's why I want her to have a baby before she turns 35."

The comment didn't elicit shocked silence or the sound of sucked-in air from her interlocutors. "All Night Nippon" is famous for such flippant comments, and by the standards of established comedians such as Beat Takeshi and Sanma Akashiya, who have spent a lot of time on late-night radio, Koda's joke was fairly tame. However, the comment was reproduced on a number of Internet sites, and from there the chat got so poisonous that some people complained directly to Koda's record company, Avex Trax, as well as to companies that use her to sell their wares. The upshot is that Kose Cosmetics and Kirin Beer have canceled ad campaigns featuring Koda, and Avex has suspended PR activities for her new album, "Kingdom," which was released Jan. 31. Despite — or even because of — the negative publicity, the album remains at the top of the charts.

Since then, media pundits have generally danced around the subject as well as the tone of Koda's comment. Wide-show hosts Monta Mino and Tomoaki Ogura both said that the producers of "All Night Nippon" should have edited the comment out of the program, since it was prerecorded. Showbiz commentator Matsuko Deluxe said as much on TBS, but she also pointed out that no one seemed bothered by the joke until the Internet picked it up and the tabloid press then made a big deal out of it. Hirotaka Futatsuki, an ex-editor of one such tabloid, Nikkan Gendai, also commented on TBS that Koda obviously wanted to say that women should have babies at a young age, but the way she put it was "unimaginable."

Koda's remark sounds like the kind of spontaneous stab at humor that pops out during conversations with friends — unguarded, off color, nonsensical. Her use of the word yosui (amniotic fluid) is especially weird, since it's not a term that springs readily to mind, much less the lips. If Koda were a professional comedian, rather than a professional singer who tries to be funny and down-to-earth in personal appearances and interviews, her joke might have been received as high-concept improvisation. Male comedians make insulting jokes about older women's bodies all the time, and nobody complains.

The offended parties took the remark at face value, and said that Koda was being disrespectful to older women who wanted to have babies. The media, in turn, took this reaction at face value. Some news shows even interviewed gynecologists, who clarified that amniotic fluid does not become spoiled after a certain age because amniotic fluid is not something a woman carries around. It's only present when a woman is pregnant. When Futatsuki said Koda's comment was "unimaginable," he didn't mean it in the sense of "horrendous," but in the literal sense: How could anyone ever come up with such an idea?

The weekly magazine Aera wondered the same thing. Is Koda's gynecological musing indicative of the biological knowledge of women her age? For sure, physicians say that having a baby tends to become more dangerous, both to mother and baby, the older the mother gets, so did this information somehow get twisted into an urban myth about rotten amniotic fluid? It would seem unlikely. Some experts said that most young women nowadays don't even what yosui is.

Last weekend, Koda appeared in an exclusive interview with Fuji TV to formally apologize. Some of the media were angry that Fuji, the parent company of Nippon Hoso, got Koda all to itself. The singer's management most certainly cut a deal since a press conference would have exposed her to all sorts of embarrassing questions. Koda appeared in a dull sensible suit minus her famously elaborate makeup and nail art, but chat sites picked up on how much skin she revealed by leaving the top buttons of her white shirt unfastened. TBS, perhaps miffed at having been denied an interview on its own, did a quick survey and found that 81 percent of the respondents thought that Koda's statement was "an excuse, not an apology."

The copious tears indicated she regretted something, and if she didn't actually utter the words "I'm sorry," she did acknowledge that her way of speaking in public "is not good" and that she "knows nothing about amniotic fluid."

The media said the negative reaction came mostly from older people, and when reporters went out on the streets to solicit opinions they only talked to older women, who don't seem to like Koda in the first place — not so much because of her music but because of her image. Unlike her main J-pop rival and Avex labelmate Ayumi Hamasaki, Koda is not unapproachable or mysterious. She's crude and candid, and as she herself admitted not very careful about her use of words.

One person's friendly candor is another's sign of casual disrespect. Some Internet commentators were also offended by Koda's reference to her older handler as "manejimento no ko (a girl in my management company)." They thought it sounded condescending, but Koda's fans probably think it's a compliment.
